Have you ever wondered who else you could have been if you had made different choices in your life? My parents had two different names picked out for me which my Grandparents shot down. One was Asia and the other one was Galandrial. Yes, they were Hippies. I think I could have rocked either name but I think it would have changed me. Sometimes I try to picture myself with either of these names and I just can't imagine being exactly the same. Try imagining your life with a very unusual name or the name of a character from a book or movie.
If something as simple as a name could make a difference in how you shaped your life, imagine how many of the major decisions you have made altered who you became. I think there are always trade offs in our lives and that one path is not good while another one is bad. We learn from mistakes and often get farther ahead because of what we learned.
In meditation I like to meet with other versions of who I could have become. What if I had pursued a singing and acting career as I thought I wanted to in my youth? What if my professor had submitted my recommendation on time and I had been accepted to a Masters program in Anthropology? What if my husband and I had ended our relationship when he moved to another state in high school? Life would have been very different, maybe better in some way and worse in others? What could you learn from these other possibilities of you?
Read through the following meditation once and then close your eyes and remember what you can. Don't worry if you take a different path in your meditation. That is where you needed to go even if it doesn't seem that way at first. Take what you are given and don't negate what you receive even if it feels you are controlling the meditation or seeing locations from movies, television shows or books. Focus on what those locations or archetypes mean to you.
Inner Temple Meditation
Take a deep breath and
walk with me down the path towards your inner temple. Where is this temple located? What does it look like? Take another deep
breath as you open the door to your temple.
As you enter the foyer one of your guides is waiting there for you. They have come to assist you on this next
journey. Greet them and thank them for
their help. Your guide leads you to a
new door that you have not yet entered.
What does this door look like and how do you feel about entering? Open the door and enter a room like no other
you have visited. This room is empty
except for a huge mirror on one wall.
What do the walls and floor look like in this room?
Your guide says that they
have come to take you on a journey. This
is the room that leads to all other places.
Allow your guide to lead you into the mirror. On the other side is a long dark tunnel. You are not afraid but curious about where
you will go. Walk down the long tunnel
and exit into the light.
You are in a new place
you have not been before. There is park
with a clearing in the center. In the
middle of the clearing is a fountain and a circular bench. Approach the fountain and you notice there is
someone sitting on the other side of the bench.
As you walk closer you notice that this person is you, but older than
you are now. Sit down and visit with
this older version of you. This version
may be an older version of your current lifeline or may have lived in very
different circumstances than you ever did.
Ask them to tell you about themselves.
They may give you a detailed story or just the current lesson they are
there to impart. In what ways to they
look different than you? You may be
struggling with an aspect of life they have figured out. What do they have to tell you? Are they happy with their life? Do they have any suggestions for you in your
current life?
You may ask them any
question (age, relationships, children, career). They may not give you a clear answer or the
answer you are looking for, but know that they may be a different version of
you, not a glimpse of the future. They
are there to give you wisdom not predictions.
Ask if they have a gift for you? Take any gifts offered and thank them. You may ask them to become one of your guides
and return with you to your temple.
Rejoin the guide that
brought you who is on the other side of the bench. You may ask them any questions about the
interaction. You may ask why they
brought you here if it is unclear.
When you are ready you
can approach the tunnel again and begin the long walk back to your temple. When you walk through the mirror again you
have one last chance to ask any questions of your guide. Thank them and know that you can ask any
guide at any time to accompany you down this tunnel to the place you need to
visit at that time. When you are ready
you can open the door and exit this room.
If your other self has
returned with you, allow your guide to show them to the room with the archway
and meet the other guides. Thank them as
they leave the foyer.
Walk to the altar in
your foyer. You should have some item
there as a reminder of the creation of all the current rooms in your
temple. This is the foundation. Your temple may change over time as you add
new rooms or as rooms are no longer useful to you. You may expand the areas around your
temple. Your temple will always exist
here in some form and will always grow and change to be exactly what you need.
Take one last look
around. Send gratitude out to the
energies around you for this place and the peace and growth it has and will
bring you. Take your time and when you
feel ready exit the front door. Walk
down the path and begin to hear the sounds around your physical body. Drift off to sleep to learn more in your dreams or wiggle your fingers and toes and when you feel ready, open your eyes.
Return to your body by drinking or eating, or self massage. Somehow connect with your body and the physical world if you have decided to wake up. Write down what you have learned from this meditation. I hope you enjoyed meeting with yourself and learned something powerful.
